Rogers Takeover of Toronto Sports

December 1, 2010

Hey All

I have got a lot of emails about this and figured I would throw in my 2 cents

Here are my thoughts on Rogers buying a controlling share in MLSE. I think it has the potential to be a great idea. Rogers will have the entire distribution channel locked up so all the revenues that are generated will go directly to them. This is similar to how the Yankees and knicks operate. So this has the potential to be great for the city. However, we still need good sports people around the teams. Rogers tried throwing money at the jays to buy a winning team, but that didn’t work, the Knicks have shown you can just buy lots of players, you need some good people around. However with Rogers securing the entire package, they will be able to generate more revenues and be able to afford to spend more. The cost is huge, 1.3 billion, but over the long term, they will be able to nmake that back. This does bring a new energy and vibe into the city sports scene that hasn’t been seen in a very long time.

In review, its a good thing for sports in the city, and the model has been shown to work, but we still need good sports people around the teams.
